Windows Server 2008 R2 compatible .NET versions

Windows Server 2008 R2 was launched on July 2009, 16 months after release of Win Server 2008.

On February 2011, Service Pack 1 was released.
  • It is a server version of Windows 7.
  • It supports .NET 3.0 & above. This also means it can support WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) which is a improvement provided by .NET foundation for Client/Server programming.
    • Earlier .NET 2.0 remoting was widely in use for Client/Server which has now become legacy technology and hence not recommended. 
    • Preferred for distributed application is WCF.
  • Support status from Microsoft for 2008 R2
    • Mainstream support ended on 13 January 2015.
    • Extended support ends on 14 January 2020.
